Updated: 2016-04-28-20:06

Two people were killed as the bike they were travelling on was hit from the rear by a speeding truck carrying 22 bullocks at Bheru Ghat on Khandwa road on Thursday.

The truck caught fire from the fuel in the motorcycle killing 21 bullocks which were packed in the cramped space of the truck’s rear, Simrol police said.

The death of cattle infuriated the villagers, who alleged that the truck driver was transporting cows. Police reached the spot in strength and pacified the angry crowd.

The incident took place early in the morning when Dharmendra Singh, 38 and Mukesh Singh, 32, were moving towards their hometown Mohanpura in in Pandhana area of Khandwa district. Their motorcycle was hit by a truck.

Mukesh and Dharmendra sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot, Simrol police station incharge SD Mule said.

The bike got struck under the truck as one of the heavy vehicle’s tyres went over it. The motorcycle got dragged for around 600ft. The friction caused from the ground started the fire in the motorcycle’s fuel tank, he said adding the fire spread quickly on to the truck. The bullocks packed in the truck’s rear were trapped.

As the truck turned into a ball of fire, villagers rushed to the spot and tried to douse the flames. Police also reached the spot and tried to save the cattle.

“Only one bullock could be saved,” said Mule.

The drive and the cleaner of the truck fled the spot.

Mistaking the bullocks for cows, the villagers raised slogans seeking immediate action against the truck owner. As the crowd grew, police teams arrived in strength. The situation calmed down when senior officials held discussions with village elders.

Mule said cases were registered against the truck driver and the owner. The truck was registered with the Bhopal regional transport office. A team of police has been sent to Bhopal to trace the truck owner.
