A 52-year-old man was charred to death as fire engulfed six thatched houses at Barei village under Marsaghai block in Kendrapada district on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Alekha Sethi. He was burnt alive while trying to douse the flames, police said.
Sources said the fire broke out in the house of one Mitu Sethi and spread to other houses in no time. Firemen from Kendrapada rushed to the spot and it took them an hour to douse the flames. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
Property worth Rs 10 lakh was gutted. The fire devoured paddy bags, television sets, refrigerators, chairs, tables, brass and aluminium utensils, gold and silver ornaments and other valuable items, the sources added.
Block development officer and other officials visited the village after the incident, said SDPO (Kendrapada) Purna Chandra Pradhan.
“The affected will be provided houses under Indira Awaas Yojana,” said collector (Kendrapada) Debraj Senapati.
