Fire at GUVNL substation
Updated: 2016-04-29-09:13
A fire broke out at the Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) substation in Jambuva on Thursday night.
According to the fire brigade, the dry grass in the compound of the substation caught fire that spread to other parts. There was no casualty.
“The fire was controlled before it could lead to power failure in the vicinity. It would have been difficult had the fire spread to the transformers. Locals in the surrounding areas were affected by the thick fumes,” said Om Jadeja, fire officer.
Jadeja added that eight fire fighters were pressed into service and doused the blaze within 30 minutes. Empty packaging materials used for cables were also damaged in the fire.
“We believe a cigarette butt may have triggered the fire at the compound. Locals told us that there were no security guards near the spot when the fire broke out,” adde Jadeja.
This is the second incident of fire at an electricity supply substation. On March 29, cables and ring main units (RMU) worth Rs 84 lakh were gutted in a fire at Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Limited (MGVCL) Vasna Subdivision.
Although no injuries were reported from the spot, about five fire tenders were called to douse the fire.
