Fire at factory unit, workers have narrow escape

A fire broke out at a Knitwear unit on Bahadurke Road on Saturday morning. Ten employees of the factory who were stuck on the second floor had a narrow escape, as a ladder had to be used as a bridge from an adjacent building to rescue them.

Though no casualty or injury was reported, four employees had to be hospitalised after they complained of problems in breathing.

According to the factory owner, goods and machinery worth lakhs were damaged in the fire that was reportedly triggered by a short circuit. The fire broke out at around 9am. Ten fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and it took around 4 hours for them to douse the flames.

As the fire engulfed the first floor, 10 employees were stuck on the second floor, which was being used as a godown. To escape, the employees had break windows to drain out the smoke. After around half an hour, a ladder was pitched from a building next to the factory to rescue them.

An employee said the rescue took place before the fire brigade could reach the spot. Of the 10 employees who complained of breathlessness, three were taken to a private hospital, from where one of them was referred to Dayanan Medical College and Hospital. A fourth employee was taken to the civil hospital.

The employee who was admitted to civil hospital, Ashiq, said he and accidentally smoke from the fire and that resulted in problem in breathing.

The owner of the factory, Ashwani, said the health of all the employees admitted to the hospital was improving. “Nobody is serious,” he said. “The fire broke out on the first floor. At the time it did, there was no one there and it spread fast,” he added.

Ludhiana: A fire engulfed four hutments near Jodhewal Basti on Saturday evening. Though no casualty or injury was reported, belongings of the slum-dwellers perished in the incident.

According to the information from the fire-safety department, two fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the flames extiguished soon. The reason behind the fire is unknown.

Another fire incident was reported from a garments shop in Chaura Bazar in the afternoon. All inventory kept in the shop was destroyed in the flame. Meanwhile, the fire triggered panic in the are as the market is congested and neighbouring shop-owners got worried that the flames might engulf their stores too.

The fire safety officials said that one fire tender was deployed at the spot which was able to douse the flames in around an hour
