Land records destroyed in mystery fire at MS Buildings
Updated: 2016-05-01-06:21

Thousands of files relating to land acquisition, including those of the Vyalikaval House Building Co-operative Society, were feared destroyed in a fire that broke out at the office of the under secretary revenue, land acquisition department, on the fifth floor of MS Buildings on Saturday morning.

Officials of the Vidhana Soudha police station noticed the fire around 7am and called fire tenders parked at Vidhana Soudha. “Two fire tenders were pressed into service, and the fire was doused within 30 minutes. We don’t see any major reason like electrical short-circuit.It is a mysterious fire. However, we cannot come to any conclusion so early,” a fire department officer said.

Umadevi, under secretary-revenue land acquisition, said only waste papers and old circulars were gutted. “Important files are intact.” But sources said files related to the Vyalikaval House Building Co-operative Society seem to be missing. Missing files include BBMP records on land acquisition and files transferred from Bengaluru district commissioner’s office,” sources said.

In their statements to police on Saturday noon, employees of the land acquisition department said they had forgotten to switch off the computers. However, none of them said anything on the reason for the fire orally when police visited the office earlier. “Now the employees claim that short circuit may be the reason behind the fire,” police said.

Asked whether these documents are uploaded online in government website, employees said they had no idea. “Only seniors can answer to this question,” they said. Repeated phone calls to chief secretary Aravind Jhadhav went unanswered. He didn’t respond to text messages also.
