Fire guts 30 hutments, 150 left homeless in Gomtinagar

A fire at Vijay Khand II near Mithaiwala crossing on Tuesday gutted 30 hutments in the middle of a residential locality.
It not only left 150 homeless but bursting cylinders also posed a threat to around 1,000-strong population in the area.
The fire broke out at 10.30am, engulfing the entire slum within minutes. While families rushed out of their homes, those living in adjoining localities moved their vehicles parked in the vicinity. Locals battled the flames with buckets of water before five fire tenders arrived.
It took two hours to douse the flames. Several hoardings and billboards were also destroyed. People also found it difficult to breathe as the area remained engulfed in smoke for hours. “The air conditioner of my house was also damaged as wind threatened to spread the flames,” said Sunny, a resident.Most of the slum-dwellers earn their living through petty jobs. “The slum dwellers have been living here for 15 years but the administration never bothered to take any safety measures,” said Sahil, a resident. “Because of the wind, the situation deteriorated. Bursting cylinders posed another threat to us. We ran to safety,” said Rehnuma, another local.
Fire officers said a report was being prepared on the efficacy of the fire fighting measures installed at the hotel.
Meanwhile, two more fire incidents took place in different parts of the city.
A card box and paper material warehouse located across Campbell road in Thakurganj area was gutted in fire.
