Two fires in 2 days at Biodiversity Park
Updated: 2016-05-04-01:00

Two fires in two days in Aravali Biodiversity Park have left the authorities perplexed, especially as it was no the scorching temperature which caused them.

One of the incidents, both of which happened at around 7 am in the morning, resulted in some damage to the local flora.

“Yesterday, I don’t know who or what started the fire, but today’s mishap appears to be the handiwork of kids from the school next door, who could have thrown a cigarette into the park,” said Latika Thukral, founder of Iamgurgaon, the NGO that looks after the park. The school shares a wall with the park, allowing schoolkids access to it.

“It could just be the children getting up to some mischief,” she added. On Tuesday, Thukral said the wall had been broken and bins inside the park vandalised, but the identity of the culprit, or culprits, is unclear. “The fire on Monday was bad but today our guys were there, luckily with a water tanker, and we managed to bring it under control.”

The blaze, she explained, started from the road and spread to the hills inside the park. “Some of the park’s three and four-year-old trees were burnt.”

On Monday, a fire van reached the spot at 9:15 am and helped douse the fire. “There were no casualties and the vehicle returned within an hour,” an official at the fire department said.

On Tuesday, a fire broke out in the Bandhwari waste plant, at around 10 am in the morning, but the firefighters returned at 1:30 pm after having put out the fire. An official in the department said that fires keep breaking out in this area because of garbage.
