Firefighters battle flames as a fire rages through the yet-to-be-opened Ban Phayamai tourist attraction in Pattaya, Chon Buri, yesterday. The Thai-style wooden house, which took about 10 years to build at a cost of 100 million baht, was completely destroyed.
Fire destroyed a 100-million-baht wooden house just hours before it was due to open as a tourist attraction in the Pattaya area of Bang Lamung district yesterday morning.
Ten fire trucks and crews were sent to battle the blaze at Ban Phayamai in tambon Nong Preu after the fire started at 10am, police said.
Flames spread quickly through the wooden structure as firemen took several hours to bring it under control. The house, covering 600 square wah (2,400 square metres), was built of teak and other precious wood. It was razed.
The site comprises many Thai wooden houses and sprawls over about 10 rai. It is estimated the entire property was worth about 200 million baht. The fire gutted the main wooden structure, which reportedly caused about 100 million baht in damage.
The tourist attraction is owned by Khunthong Ou-ngern, a former tourist police officer and now businessman and owner of Poipet market in Pattaya. Mr Khunthong was unavailable for comment.
Police said construction of the building began about 10 years ago. The house was in its final stages of decoration before its planned opening to visitors.
The fire was believed to have been started by a spark from an electrical short circuit while decorators were working inside the house.
