Updated: 2016-05-09-07:45
A major fire destroyed a large quantity of wood stored for a fishmeal factory in Binaga, Karwar, on Sunday evening. The place where the fire broke out is opposite INS Kadamba naval base and adjacent to NH-66 at one side, and the forest at the other.
Six vehicles belonging to fire department fought the blaze for more than six hours, but the fire raged till late Sunday night, till the time of going to press. The exact reason for the fire is not known. Initial reports said some tourists who had come to the forest for the picnic on Sunday, may be responsible. The fire lit in the forest spread swiftly to the area where the wood was stored for the factory.
Soon after the incident, senior officers of the district administration, officials from the Navy, forest and other departments rushed to the spot. Six vehicles from Karwar and Ankola fire stations, and those belonging to the Navy, were pressed into service but the fire continued to spread. Movement of vehicles on NH-66 was not affected, though.
