Several parts of Chennai suffer power cut due to fire at Koyambedu sub-station

Ashok Nagar, K K Nagar, Virugambakkam, Valsaravakkam, Cholaimedu and a few other places in Chennai suffered power cut on Tuesday night after a “major fire” destroyed cables at Koyambedu power sub-station.
“A major fire destroyed the cable in the Koyambedu sub-station and the blaze spread to other areas of the sub-station. Due to severe load on Tuesday night, the cable caught fire,” a senior Tamil Nadu Electricity Board official told TOI.
The power outage occurred around 11pm. Power was restored at 1am on Wednesday. However, it was cut at 7am for repair and restoration work.
“We restored power to several areas served by the sub-station with a temporary measure but had to shut once again to take work at the sub-station. We hope to restore power to all areas by 11.30am,” the official said.
As the weather was muggy on Tuesday night, many residents in the affected areas suffered. “As there was no power, we had to come out and stand for several hours to beat the heat and muggy weather,” said Jaya Narayan, a resident of Natesan Nagar, Virugambakkam.
Though there is no power shortage, many areas have been experiencing power cuts since the beginning of summer due to fault in cables and too much load.
