Officials investigate fires in different regions
Updated: 2016-05-12-01:00

The cause of the fire, which spread from Ok mountain in Tambon Mae Nam to Phra mountain in Tambon Bor Phud of Surat Thani province, was suspected to be forest burning, which got out of control in the dry and hot weather.

Officials also built firebreaks to save this Grade-A watershed forest of Koh Samui, according to the Forest Act B.E. 2484. Following Tuesday night’s fire at a watershed forest in Surat Thani’s Koh Samui district that reportedly blackened 15 rai of mountainous forest, district clerk Pulsak Soponprathumrat led officials to inspect the damage

Up North, a Chiang Mai forensic police team led by Pol Lt Colonel Thanandon Wittayawutthikul yesterday investigated a fire at an abandoned cloister of Wat Phrathat Doi Kham. They found the fire-starting point at the foot of the hill, about 300 metres from the temple steps. They suspected the cause of the fire – which damaged three rai of the temple area – was arson because there was no other possible heat source, Thanandon said.

Meanwhile, Doi Suthep-Pui National Park head Amporn Panmongkol yesterday said photos of burnt wildlife that had been circulating on Thai social media didn’t come from Sunday night’s fire at the park’s Khun Chang Khian Forest as claimed. He said officials were probing the source of the photos and affirmed officials continued to watch out for fire at the park area. The fire damaged 300 rai.

Down South, a peat swamp forest fire which broke out on May 3, continued to ravage areas in four districts of Narathiwat province, despite official and volunteer air- and ground fire-fighting efforts. Eight tambons of Sungai Padi, Sungai Kolok, Bacho and Yi Ngo districts were affected.

In Chumphon, a fire at popular attraction Khao Thalu was still smouldering, although – at press time – flames had not spread to farmlands and residential areas of the three tambons. So far, the fire, burning for four days now, has covered only mountainous areas of Na Sak, Khao Khai and Khao Thalu.

It reportedly led to some lime rock falling on mountain homes. A police probe initially found that a person accused of lighting the fire had tried to burn beehives on the mountain. Provincial governor Somdee Khachayangyeun has instructed officials to file a police complaint against him.
