Major fire in field raises alarm in Candolim

A major fire broke out mysteriously in the fields near the church at Candolim.
Alert villagers informed the fire service personnel, electricity department officials and the Candolim sarpanch who rushed to the site on Wednesday evening. Sarpanch Sandra Fialho said the grass in the field caught fire and threatened to spread to the overhead electricity cables and houses nearby.
Electricity department’s assistant engineer in Calangute, A E Chandran, who was present at the site, said that the heat from the fire could have melted the overhead electricity cables and also the transformers, which would have lead to an electricity supply problem in the area.
A large portion of the field was burnt, but the electricity cables were not damaged, Chandran said. Official from Pilerne fire brigade said that they took two hours to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading.
