Updated: 2016-05-14-09:17
A fire broke out in a leather manufacturing unit in the industrial area of Sector 37 on Friday morning. One floor of the unit was completely gutted in the blaze while two other floors were damaged.
Eight fire tenders were pressed into service and the blaze was brought under control after more than two hours.
The fire department said the blaze started around 5.30am on the ground floor of the unit but they were informed about it around 6am. Eight fire tenders with 22 firemen were rushed to the spot. Though the rescue operation was in progress, the fire soon spread to the basement and the second floor.
The fire safety officer, I P Kashyap, said the first floor was protected from fire since the door to the floor’s entrance was locked. “The company had stocked cardboards on the staircase to the basement which caught fire as well and the blaze spread to the basement. The basement was half burned down and second floor was also damaged. There was a kitchen on the second floor,” he said.
