Wamena airport temporarily closes after aircraft fire
Updated: 2013-05-08-17:34

The airport in Wamena, Papua, has been closed after a Nusantara airlines cargo plane caught fire on Wednesday, an official has said.

“All flights in the airport are temporarily halted today, and it is hoped that it can resume operation tomorrow,” Lt.Col. Yusuf Sampetoding, a local military commander on the scene, said in a text message.

Officials said that the fire started when diesel fuel came into contact with an open flame as it was unloaded from the aircraft.

The aircraft’s fuel tank soon exploded, injuring two and damaging the aircraft.

Co-pilot Vincensius Ryan Perkasa, 31, sprained his knee while Chris Wetipo, 23, an airport worker, suffered from minor burns. (nai/ebf)
