Updated: 2013-05-06-02:51

KANPUR: Five persons, including a six-year-old boy were injured when a gas cylinder, meant for welding, exploded at a cycle repairing shop in Parampurwa area, under Juhi police station, here on Sunday afternoon.

The police till the time of filing this report are not sure how the explosion happened. They suspect some kind of leakage in the cylinder may have triggered the explosion.

The cycle repairing shop owner Mohd Laiq and his son Raees were working in the shop when the cylinder exploded, the police said. Soon after the mishap, the locals of the area rushed to the site and found the two lying in a pool of blood. Stench of gas had filled the area. The locals then immediately admitted the father and son duo besides three other identified as Mohd Laiq, Saif Ali, Riyaz and a six-year-old Bilal, to a nearby private nursing home. The doctors stated the condition of Mohd Laiq and his son to be stable. Three others are reportedly stated to be out of danger.

According to an eyewitness, “They were using a carbide gas cylinder for welding. Suddenly there was a loud deafening sound. The cylinder had sprung into the air and hit the doors of a neighbouring house belonging to one Meraj Ahmed razing down the walls of his house. The impact was so severe that broken pieces of cylinder got scattered all around. The father-son duo suffered serious injuries and burns as fire broke out after the blast in the shop. The fire department reached the site and doused the fire. According to the police, the shop was functioning in a residential area without adequate safety measures.
