Jagannath University’s newly constructed academic building catches fire
Updated: 2016-05-17-11:24
A fire broke out at an academic building of the Jagannath University in Old Dhaka.
It took three fire-fighting units almost 40 minutes to put out the flames on Tuesday morning.
The sixth floor of the newly constructed seven-storey building caught fire around 8:15am, said Fire Service’s Deputy Assistant Director Md Saleh Uddin.
“There’s a duct on that floor, by which electrical wiring ran through the whole building. There was pile of paper beside it.
“We suspect someone had tossed a cigarette stub or any other kind of flammable object, which caused the fire,” he said.
The building houses several departments, including that of business administration and journalism. Teachers, students and staff had to evacuate the building after smoke spread.
Fire service official Saleh Uddin said that the fire did not cause much damage, but it belched out clouds of smoke.
Construction works are on to build additional floors beyond the seventh floor. University authorities said they have plans to make the building a 20-storey facility.
