Updated: 2016-05-17-08:21

A major fire broke out at Ukai Thermal Power Station’s unit number-5 of Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) located on the banks of Tapi river in Songadh taluka near Ukai in Tapi district on Monday. There were no casualties. A couple of workers at the thermal unit had fainted and they were rushed to Vyara Cvil Hospital, sources said.

The fire incident was reported around 10:30 am on Monday due to oil leakage in the thermal unit-5. Before the engineers could fix the leakage, there was fire in the unit, official sources said.

At least six fire tenders from Songadh, Bardoli, Vyara and Ukai were rushed to the spot. Two fire tenders of Ukai thermal power station were also pressed into service to bring the fire under control.

Vyara fire officer Ajay Jadhav said, “Gaining access to the unit was a big challenge for us as it was engulfed in fire. We rescued two workers who had fainted due to carbon emission from the fire.” The fire was brought under control around 1:45 pm. The flames had engulfed the entire unit and had reached up to a height of 25 metre.

A deputy engineer with Ukai thermal power station told TOI, “It was a major fire and the entire unit-5 had suffered heavy damage. All the civil, mechanical instruments, turbine and furniture have been damaged in the fire that erupted due to leakage of oil. A survey has been undertaken at the unit and a report will be submitted to the authorities concerned on Tuesday.”

He added, “The assessment of losses is being done by the different wings at the unit. Technical teams from Vadodara have also arrived to assess the damage.”

M R Vasava, mamlatdar of Songadh taluka, said, “The fire has been brought under control. There has been no major loss because of the fire. Power station engineers are detecting the cause of the fire.”
