Updated: 2016-05-19-02:00
Fire broke out at a pharmaceutical drugs store at Nuvem early Wednesday morning. The entire stock of medicines, four computers, two air conditioners, one refrigerator, and several items of furniture were gutted, sources in the fire and emergency services (F&ES) informed.
Sources in the Verna fire station, which attended to the fire incident, said that they received a call at 7.07am informing them about smoke billowing out of the Nuvem Drugs House. While initially one fire tender from Verna fire station was deployed for the fire-fighting exercise, another fire tender from the Margao fire station joined the operation soon. The firefighters battled the raging flames for close to an hour before taming the fire.
While fire and emergency services personnel claimed to have saved goods and property worth over 10 lakh, the owner of the pharmaceutical store, Akshay Parab, has claimed a loss of Rs75 lakh.
“Overheating of electrical points is likely to have triggered the fire,” F&ES sources said.
