Sporadic fires in Uttan dumping ground
Updated: 2016-05-23-23:43
Sporadic fires are being reported from the dumping ground at Uttan in Bhayander (west) that surrounds nine villages. Fire personnel and water tankers have been deployed on the spot.
The Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has been using the Dhavgi Hill in Uttan to dump the region’s daily waste of around 500 tonnes. The wastes are dumped in the open without scientifically recycling them. Since early Sunday, villagers are noticing sporadic fire in the dumping areas causing massive air pollution and breathing difficulties.
The dumping ground was in September 2009 the MBMC’s solid waste management plant. The plant shut down following protest by the surrounding villages.
The municipality has been scouting for an alternate plot for its waste recycling plant. The MPCB has moved Thane court against the open dumping of garbage in Uttan.
