Fire breaks out at Jajmau tannery

KANPUR: A major fire broke out at a leather tannery unit in Jajmau area on Saturday morning destroying property and raw material, worth several lakh.
Around 9am, a major fire broke out at the Dawn tannery, a leather tanning unit owned by Mohd Shakir of Idgah road Jajmau in Chakeri police area of the district. The fire spread to other portion of the unit.
Meanwhile, factory workers and locals alerted the Jajmau Fire station. Several fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire. It took nearly an hour for the firefighters to put out the fire. “A short circuit might have caused the fire,” said a fire official.
“The exact reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained. But as per the tannery owner, fire devastated finished and unfinished leather products. The loss is yet to be ascertained,” said a police official at Chakeri police station.
Elsewhere, a fire broke out in Vinoba nagar of Ramadevi in the afternoon hours of Saturday. Due to the fire, the loss has been estimated to be several thousand.
The fire broke out in the house of one Ram Babu. Several fire tenders reached the spot and it took them 30 minutes to control the situation. Electrical appliances like a refrigerator, TV etc were damaged. Fire official said there was no one in the house at the time of incident. Also, the cause of fire is stated to be a short circuit.
