A factory, making air-conditioners for several leading car manufacturers, was gutted in a massive blaze in Phase 3 of IMT Manesar on Sunday afternoon.

The fire, which began around 2pm, engulfed the two-storey building of Subros Limited, destroying the factory on the ground floor and offices on the first floor. The fire department deployed 25 tenders, which took over four hours to control the blaze. However, no casualties were reported as most staff was on leave, it being a Sunday.

Subros officials said the fire started from a short-circuit in the material dispatch area. They said they’re yet to ascertain losses, but it would run into several crores. “We have over 1,300 employees. Around a dozen were working on Sunday. Fortunately, there was no casualty as the alarm went off quickly and they ran out,” said Pawan Yadav, HR manager, Subros.

A worker who was inside when the fire began, said an industrial LPG cylinder inside a moulding machine exploded minutes after the fire started, causing it to spread faster. “We heard and saw a blast, but only later got to know the moulding unit was on fire. We also saw a part of the wall collapse,” said Chatar Singh.

By 2.12pm, the fire brigade was alerted and eight tenders and 35 men rushed to the spot. When they failed to control the fire,by 4pm, 15 tenders were involved. Finally, around 25 tenders and a 100 firemen brought the fire under control by 6pm. Fire safety officers I S Kashyap and Birbal Sharma also surveyed the area and decided to barricade the building to avoid any mishap in case of any other blast.

“It took us five hours to control the fire but we still need to check for embers as there is a lot flammable industrial good in the building,” said I S Kashyap, fire safety officer.
