Fire suffocates two elderly people to death in Roorkee

DEHRADUN: Two elderly members of a family were suffocated to death on Saturday due to smoke after a major fire broke out in a two-storey building’s basement at Roorkee’s main market in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar district.
Haridwar SSP Arun Kumar Joshi said incident occurred at 5.30 am when these two victims, Lokesh Kumar (67) and Hukumi Devi (70) were sitting on the second floor of the building.
Owner of the building Rakesh Aggarwal said that they have a shop of groceries on the first floor and the second floor is residential. Joshi said that the two victims were sitting in a room on second floor as fire broke out on the building. Hukumi is the mother of Aggarwal.
Haridwar SP K L Shah said a short circuit led to the fire in the basement which was being used as godown. Shah said that the fire gutted the basement and spread to the first floor of. Before the fire could reach the second floor, all family members escaped but these two elderly people got trapped inside.
A senior police officer said the bodies were recovered from the house by fire brigade personnel who reached in half an hour after the fire was spotted.
A senior fire officer said more than six fire brigade vans were pressed into service to extinguish the fire.
