Fire at pharma firm plant
Updated: 2016-06-05-04:27
A fire broke out at a plant of a pharmaceutical company in Saidpura village of Derabassi on Friday night, destroying products and chemicals.
The blaze erupted when around 100 workers were present in the manufacturing unit of Nectar Life Sciences. Fire tenders from Zirakpur, Panchkula and Chandigarh were called to douse the flames.
One of the workers said, “We tried to control the fire ourselves at first, but it soon spread and we had to call the helpline.”
Within 30 minutes, around five blasts occurred after the fire reached drums and pipelines in which chemicals were stored. A fire-fighter said, “We were not able to reach the main building due to the blasts. It took over 3 hours to douse the flames.”
Initially, three fire tenders were called from Derabassi but when the situation turned worse, fire tenders from neighbouring towns were also called.
Nearby villages were put on alert due to the release of smoke from chemicals. A company employee claimed, “The loss is estimated to be around Rs 20 crore. A team from Mumbai is on its way and they will assess the exact figure of the damage.”
