Updated: 2016-06-06-00:00
Authorities have arrested a 40-year-old man who allegedly locked up his two sons and their cousin in their house in Cainta, where a fire broke out shortly after on Friday night.
Larry Espinosa was cornered by responding police officers in his hideout on Saturday night, according to Rizal police director Senior Superintendent Adriano Enong.
Espinosa’s wife Lilia, 44, was arrested immediately after the incident.
Police said the couple admitted that they locked up their children Nico, 15, and Kevin, 7, and their cousin, Coolen, 2, at their house in Sitio Bagong Silang, Barangay San Juan so they could play a card game with their neighbors.
Cainta police chief Superintendent Marlon Gnilo said the Espinosas had been using candles for two days as their power supply was cut off.
Neighbors tried to rescue the three children, but they could not open the door.
Firefighters recovered the victims’ charred remains at around 1:40 a.m. of Saturday.
Charges of serious negligence resulting in multiple homicides were being prepared against the couple.
