Woman set on fire by ‘in-laws’ dies
Updated: 2013-05-15

A woman succumbed to her burns in Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday, two weeks after she was set on fire allegedly by her in-laws over an ownership row.
Laila Islam Lipi, 29, lived with her husband, Jalal Uddin, and her in-laws in a
two-storey building at Siddique Bazar in Old Dhaka.
She had suffered burns over 60 percent of the body.
Police arrested Lipi’s mother-in-law Momtaz Begum and sister-in-law Parveen on May 2, the day the two with five others doused Lipi with kerosene and set her on fire.
Her in-laws were claiming the share of ownership of the two-storey building, which was reportedly funded and owned by Jalal.
Jalal and Lipi got married nine years ago. After the birth of their daughter, Lipi’s in-laws threatened to kill the girl, forcing her to send her daughter to live with her mother in the capital’s Wari.
Lipi was set on fire when her husband was at his shop on the building’s ground floor on May 2. Jalal sued seven of her family members on that day over the attack.
