Fire in dumping ground at Kalyan
Updated: 2016-06-10-00:53
A major fire broke out in Adharwadi dumping ground in KALYAN on Thursday evening. This is the third major blaze in the dumping ground within 10 days.
“We rushed four vehicles and four tankers to the spot. Dousing operations are still on,” said fire officer Sudhakar Kulkarni.
Firemen claimed that the blaze may not be completely controlled till rains arrive as the searing heat and evening breeze fan the flames from time to time. “The heat is causing fires at the dumpyard despite us keeping a constant watch,” added Kulkarni.
After the first fire broke out on May 31, at least 2,000 locals were asked to vacate their homes as a precautionary measure. The blaze was doused by June 2. Last Sunday, another fire broke out on the dumping ground and was brought under control the next day.
KDMC chief E Ravindran was unavailable for comment. Earlier, the KDMC had proposed scientific closure of the overflowing Adharwadi dumping ground, but as due to opposition at the alternative sites, the plan was dropped.
