‘Small’ forest fire destroys bldr’s godown

A forest fire in the Ghodbundar Road part of the Yeoor forest range spead to a nearby plot and engulfed the godown of a prominent city builder in flames, burning all the construction material it contained on Saturday.
It took the fire brigade and regional disaster management (RDMC) team over three hours, three fire engines and two water tankers to douse the flames in the afternoon.
“The fire began in a small grassy patch of the forest, but soon spread to the nearby trees and the builder’s plot. The godown has a patra roof, which made the heat spread faster. We managed to douse the flames in three hours,” said Santosh Kadam, disaster management officer at the RDMC.
Yeoor forest range officials, however, claimed that the area did not fall under the forest land.
“The part that caught fire was somebody’s ownership plot and not forest area,” said Sanjay Waghmode, forest range officer, Yeoor range.
