Boy survives fire, but 3 siblings die
Updated: 2016-06-22-00:00

A boy in a brood of four found himself the lone survivor of a fire that killed his three other siblings in Barangay Colon, City of Naga, Cebu, around 4:40 a.m. yesterday.

Senior Fire Officer 2 Ruseller Generalao said the fire started in the living room of the house of the Sayaang family and spread up to the second story which was made of light materials.

The survivor, Iveren Sayaang, 13 years old, who suffered first-degree burns and scratches from broken glass, said he was able to escape from the second story by jumping out of the window.

He tried to convince his sisters Allison Lee, 19; Angel Lavigne, 10; and his brother Ace Andre, 12, who were still inside, to also jump out from the window, but they got afraid and looked for another way to escape.

Generalao said they might have been overcome by smoke as they looked for other ways out of the burning house.

Initial investigation reveals that the cause of fire is electrical grounding due to the rain that fell the night before.

The Naga Fire Department received the alarm 4:49 a.m. and immediately rushed to the area and declared fire out at 4:57 a.m. Generalao said the fire was controlled before it could spread to neighboring houses.

Total damage was estimated at P300,000.

It was reported that before the incident only the four of them were sleeping in the house. Firefighters said the whereabouts of their father are unknown as he is separated from their mother who is working in Saudi Arabia.

The lone survivor is now in the care of his aunt, Marilou Sayaang.
