Major fire in Solar unit at Hojiwala estate in Sachin

In a major fire that erupted in Hojiwala industrial estate on late Thursday evening, large amount of machines, equipment, rubber and plastic material apart from office and other material in godown was turned to ashes. It took the fire officials about six hours before the fire was contained and eight hours to completely douse it. The causes of the fire are not known yet.
Luckily, the fire started at dinner time, and so no one was tapped in the 300 feet long plant and no loss of life was reported in the incident.
According to officials from Surat fire brigade, initial fire started at 8.20 pm in a part of Novitas Solar private limited plant located in plot number 20 of Hojiwala industrial estate. Ten vehicles including fire tankers doused the initial fire by 10.30 pm. However, lack of water and lack of cooling resulted in fire reigniting.
“Once it was reignited , it spread quickly and major portion of the unit was caught in the fire. It took us another six hours to douse and then another two hours to cool the place,” said Haribhao Boraste, fire officer who rushed to the spot with his team.
“There was no provision of any water and so our water bowsers had to go all the way to Sachin bridge to fill up the water and as a result the work slowed down,” said SK Acharya , chief fire officer of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). “In addition to that, such a huge unit had nothing installed on the name of fire safety or firefighting equipment. We would be issuing him the notice to this regard.” he added.
