Shop worker dies in fire at Chittagong’s Central Plaza
Updated: 2016-06-28-16:25
A man has died in a fire at a shopping centre in Chittagong.
Police said ‘Hasan’ died due to asphyxiation caused by fumes after the Central Plaza, at the city’s GEC Mor, caught fire on Tuesday morning.
The 28-year-old worked at a tailor shop on the third storey of the shopping complex.
Rescuers said no customers were inside when the fire began in one of the 33 stores early in the morning.
Fire fighters reached the spot at 8:30am, said Agrabad Fire Service Control Room official Shahidur Rahman.
Hasan was found in a critical state and sent to the Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH). He died around 11 am.
Twenty fire engines worked to bring the fire under control around 11:30 am but dumping continued until the afternoon, said Rahman.
The five-storey building did not have a water reservoir, making fire fighting difficult. “Valuable time was wasted in finding water,” he said.
