A FIRE broke out in the kitchen of an outlet at the Food Court, The Centrepoint shopping complex in Gadong, forcing the evacuation of guests in the adjoining hotel early yesterday morning.
However, the fire did not spread to the hotel and all the guests were safe, said Arrifin bin Yakub who is part of the management of the building.
The Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 4.24am and dispatched two fire engines from the Beribi Fire Station to the scene.
When the firefighters arrived, the kitchen of the food outlet on the ground floor was engulfed in flames.
Some 18 firefighters led by Station Officer Murni bin Haji Misir took about 10 minutes to extinguish the fire.
Arrifin bin Yakub said the fire from the kitchen reached the 7th floor through a smoke funnel, but was kept under control with the aid of water sprinklers.
The cause of the fire and the losses are under investigation, according to the Fire and Rescue Department.
There was no report of loss of life.
Early shoppers were caught by surprise as the shopping complex was closed with the smell of burnt plastic in the air.
