Firefighters work to extinguish the flames at Myanmar York Fashion factory in Yangon’s Hlaing Tharyar township yesterday morning.

A garment factory in Hlaing Tharyar industrial zone caught fire and lost most of its merchandise yesterday morning, according to the fire brigade.

The fire broke out at Myanmar York Fashion factory on Kyan Sit Tha Street at 5:30am and proceeded to engulf the building.

An official at the fire service department said that 431 firefighters, 45 fire engines and 70 members of the Red Cross Society were called to the scene.

The level three fire was extinguished by 6:30am. The factory was estimated to have lost K7 million in the blaze, including building damages and clothes slated for export.

The fire department said a clothes heater left running 24 hours was suspected of starting the fire. HR manager Daw Aye Myint Nyein, who was in charge of the factory at the time, will be charged with negligence, according to the fire brigade.

During the fire, a factory official told employees who showed up for work that the factory will close temporarily. Myanmar York garment factory employees 1800 workers.
