A man was rescued by firefighters yesterday after he was trapped for seven hours in the elevator of a burning building in Barangay Ugong, Pasig.
Firefighters had to use an aerial platform to get to Jovil Ong after the elevator stopped at the sixth floor when the fire broke out in the Verizon Building around 11:13 p.m. Friday night, ABS-CBN reported. The fire reached first alarm around five minutes later.
Firefighters told Ong to drink what liquid dripped into the elevator car to stave off dehydration.
Ong’s relatives cheered when they saw firefighters carry him through a broken window just before 6 a.m.
“Huwag kang mawalan ng pag-asa sa mga nagre-rescue (Don’t lose hope that you will be rescued),” he told ABS-CBN.
The blaze engulfed the building’s entire sixth floor, which served as a storage area for garments. As the fire reached the fifth level of a five-alarm alert at around 1:37 a.m., firefighters mixed chemicals and water to shorten the time it would take to put out the flames.
Firefighters managed to control the fire at around 6:30 a.m. and put it out at around 11:20 a.m., 12 hours after it broke out.
Arson investigators were still investigating what caused the fire as of yesterday afternoon.
ABS-CBN reported that the fire destroyed P5 million worth of property.
Meanwhile, two persons were hurt and at least 300 families were left homeless after a fire broke out in Barangay Central, Quezon City on Friday night.
Melvin Ramirez, 36, and a 12-year-old girl sustained minor injuries in the fire, which lasted more than five hours, city fire marshal Jesus Fernandez said.
The fire, reportedly caused by a electrical short circuit, started at around 7:25 p.m. at a two-story house owned by Gilberto Videl, he added.
Fernandez said the fire destroyed around P1 million worth of property.
