Two persons were killed in a fire accident that occurred in a fireworks sales unit in Sivakasi on Saturday. The accident took place around 10pm when the shop was about to be closed.

The fire from the shop spread in the vicinity damaging houses, shops and an ATM. Five persons who were injured in the incident are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Fire was first noticed in the shops owned by Jagatheesan of Pochakkapatti, located at Naranapuram Junction on Sivakasi – Virudhunagar Bypass Road. A large quantity of fireworks was stored at the unit. A spark in a corner of the shop quickly spread throughout the shop, sources said.

While the workers of the shop escaped, those standing close to the shop suffered burn injuries. While one of them died on the spot, the other one succumbed to injuries on the way to a hospital.

The deceased were identified as Thangavelu, 50, of Hussain Colony in Sivakasi and Muthiah, 53, from Rameswaram. Suvisten, 35, of Hussain Colony, Athiappan, 38, and his sons Vinoth Kumar, 12, and Parthiban, 10 are undergoing treatment. An unidentified person has also sustained burn injuries, police said.

Eight houses and five shops in the vicinity were damaged as fire spread in the vicinity. An ATM belonging to the Lakshmi Vilas Bank was completely gutted. Police were yet to get details from the bank about how much cash was destroyed in the incident.

A large number of fire tenders from Virudhunagar and neighbouring districts were mobilised to the spot. The fire was completely extinguished only in the small hours of the morning.

A police officer told TOI that the shop had obtained all the clearances and was operating with a valid license. However, an investigation was being carried out to ascertain whether all the fire safety measures were in place when the fire broke out.
