Fire destroys Ateneo de Zamboanga gym, damages nearby buildings
Updated: 2016-07-07-12:55
Classes at Ateneo de Zamboanga University have been canceled indefinitely because of the fire.
A big fire hit Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) in the downtown district of this city on Thursday morning and forced hundreds of students and faculty members to evacuate to safe ground.
The fire started about 7:20 a.m. and gutted the old Brebeuf gymnasium along La Purisima Street, a few hundred meters away from the city’s fire department.
Chief Inspector Clint Cha, city fire marshal, said the fire spread quickly and damaged at least three other buildings adjacent to the old gym.
He said no one was reported hurt in the fire, which took responding firefighters from across the city two hours to contain.
Cha said the fire reportedly started in the gym but the Bureau of Fire Protection has yet to pinpoint what caused it.
Fr. Karrell San Juan, AdZU president, said the 4-storey Manuel Sauras Hall — which houses the university cafeteria and the college of law — Xavier Hall and Kostka building were damaged in the fire.
San Juan said the fire also affected several academic offices, the university registrar and its Center of Information Technology Services.
He said classes are canceled indefinitely because of the fire.
