Worker dies as fire razes huge construction camp

The charred remains of a crowded 5-rai construction workers’ camp run by Italian-Thai Development after an overnight fire, in Don Muang district, Bangkok, on Thursday morning.

A construction worker died in the flames as fire consumed a five-rai dormitory camp containing hundreds of huts operated by Italian-Thai Development Plc in Don Muang district, Bangkok, late on Wednesday night.
The fire started about 10pm at the on Pracha Uthit 1 Road, where 700 two-storey wooden huts roofed with iron sheeting were packed closely together.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene with at least 10 firetrucks, but their vehicles were unable to enter the crowded camp. Fire fighters on foot were forced to rely on small pumps to fight the blaze inside the camp, while fire engines outside showered water over and around the area to prevent the flames spreading to the surrounding community.

Fanned by a strong wind, the fire spread over the whole camp within half an hour. Residents fled, trying to save what they could, many suffered slight injuries.

A charred body was later found in the wreckage. The dead worker was identified as Phanomphorn Jan-aksorn, 20, from Loei province.

The Pracha Uthit 1 Road site was a big camp for workers employed on major construction projects by several big companies. Employees of all levels stayed there, including engineers
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
