Dumaguete fire kills man, razes 60 houses
Updated: 2016-07-10-00:00
A fire of still undetermined origin killed a 70-year-old bed-ridden man and razed more than 60 houses of 127 families at zone 4 of Barangay Looc in Dumaguete City last Sunday.
Initial investigation disclosed the fire started at the residence of a certain Junior Sales, located at the inner portion of the scene, who reportedly had a quarrel with his live-in partner Saturday evening. Sales was later seen by neighbors packing things up and leaving the house.
Shortly after, a neighbor noticed a smoke coming out of the Sales’s rented house and in a few minutes later on, fire engulfed the area.
The sick man, Paquito Miraflor, died as he was trapped in his house and could not be rescued anymore as the fire quickly spread.
Fire chief Arnulfo Sayson said the fire was tapped at 1:45 a.m. and was placed under control at past 3 a.m. with the help of firetrucks from Silliman University, Filipino-Chinese volunteers, and the towns of Valencia, Sibulan, Amlan and Bacong.
Personnel from the Department of Social Welfare and Development office immediately sent supplies, used clothing and food for the victims, who were gathered at the barangay chapel and multipurpose hall, according to DSWD-NIR regional director Shailyn Lucero.
