Early morning fire razes homes in water village

THREE houses in Kampong Sungai Kebun were razed in an early morning fire yesterday, leaving two occupants from one of the affected homes injured and receiving treatment at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.
The four families from the affected houses only managed to save themselves and important documents. According to the Fire and Rescue Department, the estimated loss due to the fire was $230,000.
Eighteen Sungai Kebun Fire Station personnel led by Commanding Officer Operation ‘D’ with three fire engines and assisted by a fire and rescue boat, rushed to the scene upon receiving the call at 5.23am.
The firemen managed to put out the fire in 43 minutes.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and no casualties were reported but two occupants of the affected houses sustained injuries to their legs.
Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, went to the scene and met with the fire victims. Also present were Dato Paduka Dr Haji Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Permanent Secretary at the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The fire is believed to have started from the kitchen of one of the affected houses.
The welfare of the victims is taken care of by relevant agencies including Community Development Department (JAPEM) and Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIS).
Meanwhile, the Village Head of Kampong Sungai Kebun Awang Haji Marali bin Matzin said, all three houses were destroyed. The fire victims at the moment are temporarily staying with their close relatives and some also received help from JAPEM.
