A supermarket in Quezon City and a warehouse in Taguig were destroyed by fire since Wednesday night, destroying a total of P20 million worth of property.

The first incident started at around 6 p.m. at Unit 506 of the VFP Building at the Veterans Center in Barangay Western Bicutan, Taguig. A clothing company used the unit to store its stock.

Firefighters put the blaze under control an hour later, but the fire was reignited after electricity was restored in the building.

They put out the fire, which reached fifth alarm, by around 4:20 a.m. yesterday. No one was reported hurt or killed. Arson probers have yet to determine what caused the fire.

In Quezon City, a fire broke out at a decades-old supermarket along Katipunan Avenue.

The blaze started on the ground floor of the three-story Shoppersville Supermarket in Barangay Loyola Heights at around 3:40 a.m., said city fire marshal Senior Superintendent Jesus Fernandez.

Security guards tried to put out the fire but had to call firefighters when they could not contain it, he said.

The fire reached fifth alarm and spread to the second floor of the building before it was put under control before 10 a.m. The blaze was put out an hour later, seven hours after it started.

Fernandez said they are still investigating what started the fire, which caused traffic gridlocks along the busy avenue.

Miriam College suspended afternoon classes for its elementary and high school students due to the smoke.
