Truck set on fire in Greater Noida after it mows down 2 bikers

Two persons on a motorcycle were crushed to death by a truck near Sector Omicron 1A in Greater Noida on Friday morning. Soon after the accident, agitated residents set the truck on fire.
According to police, the truck hit them from behind when one Ajipal (40) and his nephew Neeraj (28) had just reached Sector Omicron 1A roundabout while on their way to Pari Chowk, police said.
While the two died on the spot, the truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled. Abhishek Yadav, SP (rural), Gautam Budh Nagar, said the bodies were removed by a police team.
“Some locals threw stones at the truck and torched its front portion. Even as the mob was dispersed, two teams of firefighters, who went to the spot, contained the blaze within an hour,” Yadav said.
Yadav said the owner of the truck has been identified.
Ajipal and Neeraj were from Chakrasenpur village of Greater Noida, police said. Ajipal, a retired army officer, and Neeraj were partners in a transport business and are survived by their wives and children.
The family members of the two have demanded compensation from the authorities.
Kiranpal, a relative, said Neeraj was the father of two small children while Ajipal was taking care of his mother apart from being the breadwinner for his family. “We will demand ex gratia for the two families,” he said.
The truck had to be removed by a crane but not before the accident resulted in traffic snarls in the area in the morning hours.
The victims’ bodies have been sent for postmortem, whose reports were awaited, police said.
