Goods train engine catches fire
Updated: 2016-07-18-06:22

The engine of a goods train caught fire on Sunday evening, the day Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu was in Punjab. The two fire tenders took about an hour in dousing the flames. The goods train was coming from the Ambala side on the Ambala -Bathinda section, and when it was nearly 100 metres ahead of the Rampura Phool railway station, the engine caught fire, and black smoke started coming out of it.

Railway officials immediately called a tender and started fire-fighting operations. The spot where the incident happened was not far away from a populated area, and persons living nearby were frightened, said Rampura resident Ashwani Kumar.

“We were worried that the engine may explode, as a thick smoke was coming out of it. We had pulled out an LPG cylinder from our house in panic,” said a nearby resident, Ramesh Kumar. He said the local residents helped the railway authorities and fire tender officials in controlling the fire. Rampura Phool station master Varinder Kumar said: “We are investigating the reason behind the engine catching fire, which was controlled in less than an hour, with only two passenger trains getting disturbed.”
