The 56-year-old proprietor of a Goregaon snacks shop has been booked on charges of negligence, a day after a fire destroyed his establishment and injured four people apart from him on Sunday. LPG cylinders stored in the shop exploded and fuelled the fire further. The proprietor, Radhakrishnan Shivkumaran, has been admitted to the ICCU of Kokilaben Ambani Hospital at Andheri with 26% burns.
According to the police, Shivkumaran had procured domestic LPG cylinders through unauthorised means. “Eatables were cooked on a gas stove in the shop negligently with no attention given to the risk that it posed to life,” a statement issued by the police said.
The incident was reported around 7 am at Kundan Nagar in Teen Dongri area. Shivkumaran had finished cooking breakfast for customers when sparks started flying from the stove. Shivkumaran shut the regulator on an LPG cylinder when he noticed a fire break out. He rushed outside and started calling out to people for help, even as flames engulfed the shop. Using bamboo sticks, Shivkumaran and his acquaintances tried to shift LPG cylinders away from the fire. Suddenly, two of the three cylinders exploded with a deafening sound, hurting everyone who was close by.
Shivkumaran sustained burns on both his legs below the knee and right arm. Among the other victims, Sanjay Tupe, 51, suffered 30% burns, Sadanand Shetty, 46, suffered 40% burns and Pramod Sharma, 45, suffered 10-15% burns. Tupe and Shetty have been admitted to Tiwari hospital, while Sharma is recuperating in Cooper Hospital. All three have sustained burns on their arms and legs.
Shivkumaran had taken the shop on rent a year ago and used to start cooking around 3am everyday, locals said.
Two engines from Dindoshi and Goregaon fire brigade doused the flames. Locals alleged that the fire engines came 45 minutes late.
