Pockets of flames continue to burn in Barangay Capitol Site, Cebu City, after a fire that was blamed on a malfunctioning circuit breaker destroyed an estimated 70 houses last night.

A total of 70 houses were destroyed by a fire yesterday evening in Sitio Lower Ponce, Barangay Capitol Site, Cebu City.

The fire allegedly started in the second floor of the house of a certain Daisy Talaugon, 54, a widow.

According to fire marshal Chief Inspector Rogelio Bongabong, they received the alarm at 6:46 p.m. and immediately rushed to the area. The fire was declared under control at quarter past 8 p.m.

He said a circuit breaker was to blame for the fire which caused an estimated P500,000 in damage. He also said the number of affected houses may rise; although there are no reports of injuries or casualties.

When asked what difficulties the firefighters experienced, he said the roads to the site of the fire were narrow.

“Kalisod sa agianan mao’y nasugatan namo tungod kay interior kaayo ang sunog,” he said.

Barangay Captain Manuel Guanzon of Capitol Site said they will give food to the affected families who will be temporarily housed in the barangay’s sports complex.

“Dinalian nga pagkaon atong ihatag kanila ug ato usab sila ipahimutang dinhi sa basketball court,” he said.

Guanzon said he will call for an emergency meeting with his barangay official to declare a state of calamity in the barangay. The houses were built on a lot owned by the homeowners association.

Talaugon said she does not know how the circuit breaker caught fire. She said she just went upstairs to get a dress for one of her grandchildren when she saw it already burning. She said she just grabbed her grandchildren and ran.
