Two burnt alive after vehicles’ collision sparks fire
Updated: 2016-07-28-18:20
The driver and cleaner of a truck and a dumper were burnt alive after the vehicles collided at Bundu on Ranchi-Jamshedpur national highway on Thursday morning.
Driver of a Jamshedpur bound truck Manoj Yadav, who also owned the truck, was trapped in the mangled vehicle after collision. Before he could be rescued a fire, an outcome of collision, burnt him alive.
The driver of the dumper, which was going to Ranchi from Tamar block of Ranchi, managed to escape but its cleaner Vijay Kumar Swasi, was trapped inside the mangled dumper like the truck driver. Vijay hailed from Tamar and Yadav from Jamshedpur.
“The collision resulted into sparks which caused fire. There was no way to douse the fire in the wee hours in the low density population area. The two were alive after accident. People were trying to rescue them but were unable to do anything to help them. Had there been no fire both of them could have been saved,” said a police officer.
The picture of the men waiting for death amidst flames was, a police officer said, a bone chilling sight. “The flames grew fast after it reached the drivers’ cabins of the vehicles. The cabins are made of wood and foams are used to make seats. The inflammable materials further intensified the fire,” said a police officer.
Rural SP Raj Kumar Lakra said the reason behind the accident is not clear. “The accident took place at a place on the highway where there is no sharp turn. It is not clear which vehicle violated traffic norms and led to the accident,” he said. Both of the vehicles were found in the middle of the road.
It is likely that the drivers of both or one of the trucks were drunk. The Jamshedpur bound truck carried liquor while the Ranchi bound dumper carried sand.
Some travellers stopped by to try to rescue the victims but could not do anything. “The few houses located near the accident site were closed. The victims needed immediate help which was not possible,” said a police officer.
The accident caused a huge jam on the highway. The vehicles did not leave enough space for other vehicles to pass by the road. Ranchi-Jamshedpur highway is among the busiest highways in the state and any obstruction leads to stranding of several vehicles.
“The local police made the arrangements of cranes to remove the mangled vehicles to clear the road. After a few hours the jam was removed,” SP said.
