3 ‘saroop’ of Guru Granth Sahib destroyed in fire
Updated: 2016-08-07-04:44

Three ‘saroop’ of Guru Granth Sahib were destroyed in a fire incident in Gurdwara Baba Tahil Singh Nagar, Mirankot, near Amritsar on Saturday. According to reports, the fire broke out in the gurdwara early on Saturday morning, following which villagers gathered and doused the flames.

Before the flames could be put out, the fire had damaged three holy books. Malkiat Singh, a resident of Miran Kot, informed that there was a short circuit in a ceiling fan’s wiring, which led to fire in the room where the ‘saroop’ of Guru Granth Sahib were installed. He said at the time of the incident, there was no sewadar (caretaker) in the room. As a preventive measure, the administration deployed police force to avoid any untoward incident.

Later, the Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh said it was surprising that short circuits often occurred in the wiring of electrical equipment of gurdwaras, and not in the room of management officials or granthi (priest). While condemning the incident, the jathedar directed Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to hold an inquiry into the incident to expose the truth behind the short circuit that led to fire incidents in gurdwaras.
