Massive fire at Thamel‚ contained after nine hours

KATHMANDU: A massive fire broke out in the Capital’s tourist hub Thamel on Thursday night, gutting restaurants and shops including a major book store and reducing properties worth millions into ashes.
The fire broke out from the Faces Lounge and Bar in Narsingh Chowk at around 9:30 pm, and spread to the neighbouring businesses after gas cylinders stored in the restaurant exploded, according to police.
The inferno was contained after nine hours this morning, police informed.
It is believed that the fire started due to the problems in the electric generator in the Faces Lounge and Bar.
The fire brigades from all three districts in the Valley, and 200 security personnel were deployed to fight the fire. Several water tankers helped supply water to the incident site.
Locals also supported the firefighters in their effort to contain the fire.
Nepal Army said the armymen stationed at Narayanhiti and Bhadrakali were rushed to Thamel after receiving information about the incident.
The exact loss of the property is yet to be estimated.
Three persons, including a polliceman, were injured while fighting the fire.
However, no casualty has been reported.
