Four houses gutted in fire near Gandhi market

Residents of Pallivasal street near Gandhi market had a miraculous escape when fire broke out at their place early on Tuesday.
Majitha Begum was fast asleep along with her three children in her thatched roof house when a sudden spark triggered the fire around 1 am. She woke up when smoke engulfed the room and rushed out of the house with her children.
Even as she raised an alarm, fire started spreading on to the neighbouring thatched roofed houses. Due to heavy wind at the time of the accident, the fire spread rapidly to the houses of Amirdeen and Muhamed. All the occupants in the houses ran out before fire engulfed the structures. Fire and rescue team rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze.
Almost of the household material were destroyed. The total damage is estimated to be over 5 lakh.
One of the busiest areas in the city, the locality is congested and this made the fire fighters’ task tough.
A short circuit is suspected to be a reason for the fire. The Gandhi market police have filed a case and further investigations are on.
