A man makes sure embers die in Sitio Bamboo Village, Barangay Basak-Pardo, Cebu City. Five houses were destroyed by a fire there yesterday afternoon.

A furniture shop and at least five residential houses were razed in two fire incidents in Lapu-Lapu City and Cebu City.

Electrical misuse was blamed in the fire that destroyed the furniture shop owned by Mona Padilla in Barangay Agus, Lapu-Lapu City yesterday dawn.

Fire investigator Rodrigo Ygot Jr. said one of the appliances left unattended inside the furniture shop may have overheated and started the fire at 1 a.m.

Ygot said they received the alarm around 1:48 a.m. and declared the fire under control at 1:56 a.m. The damage was pegged at P350,000.

Meanwhile, at least five houses were razed by fire yesterday afternoon in Sitio Bamboo Village, Barangay Basak Pardo, Cebu City.

Senior Fire Officer 3 Pier Angelo Abellana said the fire started at the house of Fe Erida, who also operates an Internet caf辿.

John Kevin Reyes, one of the customers at the Internet caf辿, said he first noticed a smoke coming out but when he checked, the fire was already big. The responding firefighters were able to control the fire 10 minutes after they arrived at the scene at 2:35 p.m.

The fire department has pegged the damage at P50,000. The affected residents were temporarily evacuated near the barangay hall.

Basak Pardo Captain Dodong Cagang said he will find out if the victims can rebuild their houses considering that lot is privately owned.
