Fire at Gazipur knitwear factory under control after 16 hours

After battling for 16 hours fire fighters have finally managed to rein in the fire at a knitwear factory in Gazipur’s Kaliakoir.
The fire was brought under control at about 5:30PM on Saturday, Gazipur Fire Station official Apurba Bol told bdnews24.com.
Six persons, including fire service staffers, were injured while battling the inferno, according to Bol.
Bol said that the fire broke out on the third floor of the five-storey Tropical Knitex Ltd factory building a little after midnight on Friday.
It spread to the fourth floor almost immediately, he said.
“Nineteen units of the Fire Service rushed to the spot. The fire briefly came under control on Saturday morning but soon spiralled out of control again”, Bol said, adding that the fire was finally wrestled into control at about 5:30 in the evening.
Thread, printing machines and a host of other commodities inside the factory were charred in the blaze, he said.
Fire Service Warehouse Inspector Md Ardes Ali said that the cause of the fire or the full extent of the damage could not be ascertained immediately. He however said that preliminary investigations hinted at an electrical glitch being behind the fire.
Saiful Islam, HR official of the factory, said that the fire began at the thread section on the third floor and spread to the cutting section on the fourth floor.
Goods, machinery, thread and other commodities worth Tk 180 million in all were gutted in the flames, Islam said.
The district administration has set up a committee to probe the incident.
