Overhead live cable catches fire, snaps at railway station
Updated: 2016-08-21-12:49

There was a momentary panic at the Trichy railway junction on Saturday after a high-tension power cable over the railway tracks caught fire and snapped. The incident led to the Chennai-bound Guruvayur express to get delayed by 40 minutes.

When the Guruvayur Express (16128) was entering platform No. 1, the overhead high-tension power cable atop the engine of the train suddenly caught fire. The cable snapped subsequently. The train was taken up to Srirangam station with the help of an alternative diesel engine, from where an electric engine was attached.

According to railway authorities, when the train was entering the first platform of the Trichy junction at a slow speed, passengers waiting on the platform to board the unreserved coaches of the same train noticed that there was a spark atop the engine where the neutral cable comes into contact with the high tension live wire. Upon noticing the “big sparks” and the cable catching fire, they raised an alarm to attract the attention of the engine driver. The driver immediately brought the engine to a halt. Meanwhile, the high tension live cable had snapped.

Passengers onboard Guruvayur Express quickly alighted from the train. All passengers were safe. This incident created panic among passengers and commuters waiting on the first platform.

A technical team rushed to the spot and detached the electric engine from the coaches and a diesel engine was attached instead.

According to railway authorities, the coaches were hauled by the loco engine upto Srirangam station. From there the coaches were attached to an electric engine and departed towards Chennai.

Following the incident, the Chennai-Guruvayur express train was halted for more than one hour on the fourth platform.
